Bonfire Night

P1040048Remember, remember!
The fifth of November,
The Gunpowder treason and plot;
I know of no reason
Why the Gunpowder treason
Should ever be forgot!

That’s from 1870 about the plot to blow up the Houses of Parliament in 1605 by Guy Fawkes who (whether guilty or not) was hung, drawn, and quartered.  That means they pulled his arms and legs until he broke into four pieces.  Yuck!  And now we celebrate this or something by lighting a big bonfire and burning a fake Guy Fawkes.

I found this quote which I thought was right up my alley; it took me far too long to figure out what it meant and, once I had, made me strongly ambivalent. Which is really quite a familiar experience for me…

“Absence diminishes small loves and increases great ones, as the wind blows out the candle and fans the bonfire.”

― François de La Rochefoucauld, Maxims
