Masala Chai Hot Chocolate

Well the weather has turned colder (well actually it turned colder, hotter, and then colder again) so I thought I would look into some nice hot drinks.  As I write this I am cutting back on Green Tea and caffeine as I think it may be causing my indigestion (boyfriend thinks it was because I was drinking about 24 cups a day…) so I needed something else.

I saw on the T2 website a recipe for Iced Chai Tea which sounded nice but a) iced drinks barely work in August in the UK let alone Autumn, and b) it involved using T2 Chai Tea (not surprisingly) which has caffeine in it.  So I decided to do a spicey, masala chai style hot chocolate.

N.B Apparently, chai means milky tea, it’s the masala that brings the spice, so chai tea is tea tea…

According to the internet chai means ‘life’ in Hebrew.


  • Cinnamon (ground and stick)
  • Star anise
  • Ginger
  • Cloves
  • Milk
  • Cocoa powder

(Really Simple Recipe)

  1. Heat the milk in a saucepan, along with the spices.
  2. Pour into a mug and mix in a spoonful of the cocoa powder.

In hindsight I should have sieved the milk before pouring into my awesome new mug, as there were annoying bits of clove floating around.  I would leave in the cinnamon stick and star anise though.
